Buyer intent translates search behavior into purchase context. We separate problem research, solution understanding, commercial investigation and supplier evaluation so every URL has a clear role.

B2B search intent is multi-stage

Complex purchases are rarely decided with one search. Technical users, procurement, management and other stakeholders investigate different issues. One person searches for a problem, another for specifications and another for suppliers or risk. Intent therefore has to be connected to role and buying stage.

That changes SEO planning: a keyword does not determine the page by itself; the combination of question, buyer and next step does.

Problem, solution, comparison and vendor intent

We typically distinguish four layers. Problem intent describes symptoms or tasks. Solution intent looks for solution categories. Commercial investigation compares systems, approaches or vendors. Vendor intent evaluates specific suppliers, products, references or implementation details.

These layers may require different page types such as guides, solution pages, comparisons, use cases or service pages.

Account for the buying committee

B2B search is not performed by one generic decision-maker. Engineering cares about feasibility, procurement about terms, management about risk and business impact. SEO becomes more useful when content visibly addresses these different information needs.

That does not automatically require many pages. One strong page can cover closely related intents when its structure is clear.

Match SERP and destination page

Search results reveal which page types Google currently considers relevant. If guides dominate, a pure service page may be the wrong entry point. If supplier and product pages dominate, an informational article should not replace the commercial destination.

We use the SERP as a signal, not a rule. The decisive question is whether the page serves the buyer task well.

Use intent for internal linking

Internal links should move users through the purchase process: from problem understanding to solutions, from solutions to applications, and from applications to service or contact pages. This creates a coherent path instead of isolated content.

It also reinforces the topical role of commercial pages and reduces internal competition between URLs targeting the same intent.

Example: software for industrial processes

A technical user may first search for causes of process losses. Later, the buying committee compares solution categories and specific systems. One product page cannot serve the entire journey equally well. An intent model shows which questions should be answered early and when the commercial page should take over.

Buyer Intent for International B2B SEO

Not every B2B-related query carries the same commercial value. Buyer intent clarifies what a decision-maker is trying to solve and which page is needed at that point in the purchase journey.
